The Krewe of Avant Garde was formed in Pensacola, Florida in 1983 by a group of retired military officers who wanted to form a Mardi Gras Krewe that was a little different with a purpose of providing a visible military recognition and support in our local parades for all branches of our military.
You may typically see our float near the front of parades displaying the U.S. Flag as well as all our armed services flags. Thus, the name Avant Garde, meaning to be at the forefront, revolutionary, and different from the norm, was adopted.
However, members are not required to have any military affiliation. Our members simply share the common bond of patriotism and military support.
In 1984, the Avant Garde Krewe participated in their first Mardi Gras Parade. The Krewe sign was carried in the back of a pickup truck and the Krewe marched behind. In 1985, the Krewe rented a flat-bed trailer for riders. Now, the Krewe maintains its own float with lighting for night parades including a sound system.
Today, the Krewe of Avant Garde continues making history by being the ONLY Mardi Gras Krewe that openly recognizes and supports all branches of the military.
The mission of the Krewe of Avant Garde is to provide an organization by which current and former members of the military services, their spouses, and anyone who supports our troops can participate in the celebration of Mardi Gras in Pensacola.
We are a social Mardi Gras Krewe. No speeches, no agenda. Just having fun while supporting and recognizing our troops in Pensacola festivities.
The Pensacola parades you will see the Krewe of Avant Garde include the Veteran’s Day Parade, Christmas Parade, and Mardi Gras Parade. Our presence may be at other events and are announced via our Facebook page – Krewe of Avant Garde Pensacola.
Membership is open to anyone. Members are not required to have any military affiliation. Our members simply share the common bond of patriotism and military support.
We wear a Krewe vest at parades at a nominal cost – no expensive costumes. Purchasing the Krewe vest is optional. We hold various parties and social events throughout our Mardi Gras year, including a formal masquerade Mardi Gras Ball complete with royal court presentation, dinner, and dancing.
A membership fee is paid annually each July and may change annually pending event costs. All of our events invite guests at a separate guest cost – this also allows potential members to get a feel of our events for possible membership.
